DroidDB Tip of the Month
DroidDB® Tip for March 2020
Why do I see the message 'This app was built for an older version of Android and may not work properly'?
After you first install the DroidDB runtime, you might see the message:
This app was built for an older version of Android and may
not work properly.
Try checking for updates, or contact the developer.
The key here are the words "...MAY not function correctly". The version of DroidDB you downloaded will function correctly. So, what is this all about?
Here at SYWARE we are committed to backward compatibility. In the future, newer versions of the DroidDB runtime will work even if you try to run them on your existing (older) operating system.
Unfortunately, if we built a new DroidDB runtime using the most up-to-date Android operating system, the older versions of the Android operating system will not allow this new DroidDB runtime to run (this is a limitation of the Android operating system: the Android operating system will not allow software built for a newer operating systems to run on machines that are running an older operating system). It's the operating system that is not backward compatible, not us.
The operating system message is worded to imply it is our fault. You can safely ignore it. You will see the "may not function correctly" only once.
